Volzhin leads Grandmasters Chess by drawing with a Queen's gambit |

27, 2001 Dhaka-- - Russian Grandmaster Alexendar Volzhin maintained a solo lead with 6 points in the 5th United Insurance Grandmasters Chess Tournament after the eighth round matches yesterday at the NSC Conference room yesterday (Monday). In the 8th round, Volzhin drew with Grandmaster Alexie Barsov of Uzbekistan playing with black in Queen's gambit accepted game and drew at 13th moves. Grandmaster Jaan Ehlvest of Estonia, Normunds Miezis of Latvia, Barsov of Uzbekistan, Nigel Davies of England and Vakhidov Tahir of Uzbekistan followed the leader with 4.5 points each. In the day’s round, Ehlvest beat Indian International Master GB Prakash playing with black to take Banko gambit and won at 46th moves while Tahir beat International Msater Reefat Bin Sattar of Biman playing with black to take French defense and won at 37th moves. Miezis drew with Davies. Bangladesh’s lone Grandmaster Niaz Murshed beat his compatriot International Master Abdullah Al Rakib of Biman playing with black to take Mordan defense and won at 16 moves. Two GM norm-holder International Master Ziaur Rahman beat Indian International Master Sandipan Chanda playing with white to take English opening and won at 67th moves. FIDE Master Enamul Hossain Razib of Titas lost to Grandmaster Igors Rausis. Rausis played with black to take Caro-Kann defense and won at 35th moves. Standing after 8th round: 6- Volzhin, 4.5-Ehlvest, Davies, Miezis, Barsov, Tahir, 4-Niaz, Reefat, Rausis, 3.5-Razib, Rakib, Prakash, 3-Zia, 2-Sandipan. The
ninth round matches will begin Tuesday from 2:30pm at the same venue. The games are: Volzhin vs Rakib, Ehlvest vs Barsov, Sandipan vs Prakash, Tahir vs Zia, Rausis vs Reefat, Devies vs Razib and Niaz vs Miezis.
