Jessore (UNB) - Jute growers are in trouble with their "golden fibre" due to the price below the production cost.

According to sources, local variety of jute is being sold between Tk 200 and Tk 240 while high yielding variety of tosha at Tk 270-300 in the local markets.

A total of 33,000 hectares of land were brought under jute cultivation in the district in current season.

Due to favourable weather condition this year, some 1.47 lakh bales of jute would be produced in the district, officials said.

Although huge quantity of jute is coming in the local markets, the number of purchasers is scanty forcing the growers to sell their produces at low price.

Price of jute has also come down in the international markets, including in India, in recent days due to available of alternatives to jute goods.

India was the biggest importer of raw jute from Bangladesh. About 5.64 lakh bales of jute worth Tk 116.56 crore were exported to India through Benapole Land Port alone in last year.

But this year, India's demand has drastically reduced following bumper production of jute in West Bengal and other states, informed sources said.
