Dhaka (UNB)- Major associations of exporters, voicing their common concern over disruptive activity at Chittagong Port, feared country’s export business might face serious setbacks if the problem continued.

Representatives of various export sector associations in a meeting yesterday identified Chittagong Port problem as number one hindrance to national economic growth and urged the government to take urgent remedial measures.

They reviewed the recommendations, put forward recently to the government by a BGMEA-Daily Star seminar on port problems, and urged the government to implement those to improve the port services.

The meeting decided that representatives from all export- sector associations, led by BGMEA president, would soon meet the Shipping Secretary to seek urgent measures for resolving major problems of the seaport.

They will also meet the Shipping Minister and the Prime Minister in phases as part of their united move to help create a smooth and competitive port.

BGMEA president Anisur Rahman Sinha chaired the meeting attended by Frozen Food Exporters Association president Kazi Shahnewaz, Jute Exporters Association president Giasuddin, Speclialised Textile Mills Association president Shahjada Mia, Finished Leather Exporters Association president MA Sattar Bhuiyan, Jute Spinners Association president Ahmed Hossain, Jewelry Exporters Association president Anwar Hossain, BTMA vice president Abul Kashem Haider and BKMEA vice president Fazlul Huq.

They felt the export-oriented sectors need to take up a united stand to create a congenial internal environment to help local exportable survive breakneck global competition.
