Chapainawabganj (UNB) - Millions of taka are being laundered to India by hundi traders depriving the government of huge revenue income.


According to competent sources, the hundi traders of the district have long been involved in money-laundering taking advantage from the smugglers, exporters and common people.


The smugglers, exporters and the commoners, who prefer to avoid government rules and regulations for tangle and risks for money transaction, and evade customs duty, maintain a close relation with the hundi traders.


There are over one hundred hundi traders in the district who are overtly or covertly running their businesses in collusion with some dishonest traders at home and abroad, source said adding that pint-sized letters, tokens or particular signs are used for transacting money.


A section of unscrupulous traders under the protection of influential people built up a network in various parts of the district, including Sadar, Shibganj, Ranihati, Manakasha and Sona-masjid.


The smugglers for sending goods here and smuggling into India transact millions of taka through hundi, said a smuggler preferring to anonymity and said the safest way for transaction is hundi.


Local people alleged that many exporters are laundering money through hundi at Sona-masjid LC station in order to evade customs duty.


Besides, the people, who go to India for treatment, excursion or visits, transact money through hundi to avoid tangles by the officials concerned and gain more profit while exchanging currency, they added.


A patient on condition of anonymity said, “I am taking a few dollars with me for treatment in India, as I would get less money enchasing dollar. Hence, I sent the rest of the money through hundi.” Many of the people supported him echoing same words.
