NUREMBERG, Germany (AP)- The number of jobless in Germany furthered its drop below 10 percent for the third consecutive month in June, confirming a steady improvement in unemployment driven by a rekindled economy and booming export industry, the Federal Labor office said Thursday.

The unadjusted unemployment rate dropped to 9.1 percent in June from 9.3 percent in May, with 3.724 million out of work. That is nearly 64,000 fewer than last month.

The unemployment rate hit 9.8 percent in April, falling through the 10 percent mark for the first time since October.

Labor Office President Bernhard Jagoda said the figures were being driven by a boom in exports that has got a shot in the arm by the weak euro.

Jagoda said economic improvements were felt both in eastern and western German states, but that recent contract agreements in the eastern states also contributed to a bigger improvement in the east.

The jobless picture in former communist eastern Germany dropped to 16.5 percent, from 16.9 percent in May. But it was still more than twice the rate in western Germany, which declined to 7.4 percent in June from 7.5 percent in May.
