Chittagong (UNB) – As congestion in Chittagong Port persisted Singapore-based Chittagong Feeder Trade Committee (CFTC) has threatened to impose surcharge on feeder ships for the delay at the Port.

In a letter to Chittagong Port Authority yesterday CFTC said they would impose surcharge on the feeder ships on three routes if the congestion at the port not eased by July 20.

It said delay at the port due to congestion is causing loss as every feeder ship is compelled to stay 24 days as against usual five days for loading and unloading.

At present, 38 foreign feeder ships ply on Chittagong-Singapore, Chittagong-Colombo and Chittagong-Malaysia routes.

Port workers and stevedores created congestion due to several days’ strike last month. A total of 78 ships are now in the port and outer-anchorage and 15 more will be reaching by July 15.

Meanwhile, CFTC in another circulation informed its decision of additional charge on containers in view of price hike of furnace oil worldwide.

It said additional US$24 is to be paid for 20-feet container and US$48 for 40-feet container.

The decision will be effective from July 26.
