Dhaka (UNB) Commerce Minister M Abdul Jalil yesterday said the government has taken effective measures to simplify, strengthen and reform the existing tax and duty structure. Were now giving more emphasis on direct tax than import duty in the policy of revenue collection, he said inaugurating a training course at the Tariff Commission conference room. The inaugural function of the course on Bangladesh Export Diversification Project, its analysis and trade cooperation was presided over by Tariff Commission Chairman AYBI Siddiqui. The minister said a new world economic order has emerged with the successful completion of Uruguay Round Meeting and launching of World Trade organisation (WTO). He said the officials concerned will have to acquire sound knowledge about the WTO policies if Bangladesh wants to be involved in the world trade regime successfully. The Commerce Minister said the government has taken all out measures to turn the emerging challenges of globalisation and liberalisation into opportunities for Bangladesh, said an official handout. He called upon private entrepreneurs to supplement government efforts for protecting local industries from the strong competition of economic liberalisation. Commerce Secretary Golam Rahman and Member of Tariff Commission and Project Director Dr MA Ali Rashid also addressed the function. Member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce Ministry Mohibur Rahman Manik, Biren Sikdar, MCCI president Latifur Rahman, DCCI president Aftab-ul-Islam, BGMEA president Anisur Rahman Sinha and representatives from donor agencies including the World Bank were present. |
