BANGKOK, MAY 2 (AP) - Thailand's Cabinet approved on Tuesday a police proposal to ban the use of cell phones while driving because of an increase in accidents in recent years, the Thai state news agency reported.

Somchai Saharungreungchai, deputy government spokesman, was quoted as saying the regulation would be included in a new bill on land transportation, to be put to parliament during its next session in June.

It will be up to lawmakers to discuss what penalty the ban will carry if it is approved, but police have proposed fining offenders between 400 baht and 1,000 baht (dlrs 10.50 and dlrs 26.30), The Nation newspaper reported last week.
