Dhaka, Apr 25 (UNB) – Nationalised Commercial Banks would soon be automated giving a big push to the budding software development bid.

“NCBs can make a significant breakthrough in the IT sector” in next few months, said Governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr Mohammad Forashuddin here today (Tuesday).

He told a workshop that the finance ministry had already approved a midterm plan for computerisation of the NCBs allowing them to procure as much computers as required.

Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management and Data Soft System Bangladesh Limited jointly organised the workshop on “Banking Software: A few Proposal” at BIBM conference room.

Director General of BIBM Dr Muinul Islam and Managing Director of Data Soft Mahboob Zaman also addressed the inaugural function of the daylong workshop while Doreen Schmidt Siddiqui, partner of CSB GmbH, Germany, presented the keynote paper.

Forashuddin said automation of the banking sector was delayed due to a false perception that IT would cut human resources and, of course, CBA was another obstacle.

“Now what we need is a strong desire and maintaining status quo,” he said.

He called upon the participating IT managers to try to develop software of their own which will suit the need of time of the country.

“This is up to you (IT manager) to evolve user friendly banking software which will have all features adaptable to local needs,” the Governor said.

Zaman said ready software from outside cannot solve the local problems. “We just have started the beginning of a process of developing software which will be developed by ourselves. We have to develop the software in accordance with our need by hiring concept from outside.”

Doreen recommended individual business processes, banking software, system analysis and programming. A foreign software is not customized and no maintenance support will be available, she added.
