Dhaka--(UNB) – Cotton growers, agents, traders and ginners yesterday formed a united forum titled Bangladesh Cotton Association (BCA) aiming at protecting their interests and taking steps for the promotion of this sector. The first Annual General Meeting of the association with an ad hoc committee was held yesterday fixing February 24 for its first ever election. Kamal Rahman, Convenor of the BCA, said at present Bangladesh produces about 40,000 to 50,000 bales of different grades of cotton, which only fulfil 10 per cent of the total requirement. The country now import about 8 lakh bales of cotton annually at the cost of hard earned foreign currency, he informed. Kamal said government support in this sector could help the country in establishing the most important backward linkage industries for the booming readymade garments sector. |
