Untimely watermelon cultivation show tremendous success |

Thakurgaon-- (UNB) – Untimely watermelon cultivation, first ever in the district, showed tremendous success and attracted local farmers to cultivate this fruit. Sources said the untimely fruit that contains usual flavors and smell alike the seasonal watermelon, are being sold at high prices in the market. Assistant Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Abdus Salam told UNB that three farmers – Khalilur Rahman, Alimul Huq and Fajir Uddin -- cultivated watermelon during late monsoon first ever in the district. Watermelon is normally cultivated in the dry (Kharif) season. Being inspired by block supervisor Ashwini Kumar Adhikary, they brought 7 hectares of land under watermelon cultivation and got unexpected output. They harvested around 55 mts of watermelon per hectare of land and are selling those in the local markets with high price, and also sending Dhaka and other parts of the country. Khalilur Rahman said he harvested watermelon beyond his expectation and counted more benefit. Echoing Rahman Ashwini Kumar said he was expecting Tk one lakh profit from the untimely watermelon cultivation. The success of the untimely watermelon cultivation have encouraged other local farmers and they are asking the DAE officials in advance to supply sufficient seeds next year. |
