Dhaka--(UNB) – Progressive Forum, a new platform for the country’s garments sector, emerged yesterday (Saturday) with an 8-point charter to solve the problems facing the industry.

“The existing leadership of BGMEA has miserably failed to solve problems afflicting the garment sector because of narrow focus,” Engr M Abu Taher, president of the Forum, told a press conference at Hotel Sonargaon.

Taher also announced his candidature for President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) in its election due in February next with a commitment to work on the charter to save the industry from the post-MFA situation.

“If elected, the forum would develop with the Bangladesh Bank a system to segregate defaulted loans in block accounts caused by factors beyond control of garments exporters,” he said.

He said the existing leadership could not solve the problems like port congestion and loan rescheduling of the sick RMG factories.

The charter included demand for a separate zone for garment industry like EPZs to eliminate fire hazards, establishment of private container terminal to quicken exports and making quota available to manufacturers only, not to the specialised textile mills.

The charter also demands 25 percent cash incentive on value addition, half of which can be kept segregated as bad debt provision.

The Forum also demanded duty and quota-free access of Bangladeshi product to US market.
