Finance Minister to help slum-dwellers under govt.-funded plan |

Dhaka-- (UNB) Finance Minister Shah AMS Kibria yesterday asked the NGOs to take measures to help return slum-dwellers to their own villages under a government-funded rehabilitation plan. The government will provide all-out cooperation in this regard, he said doling out loans under the home-return programme for the rootless people at the head office of Bangladesh Krishi Bank. Chaired by BKB chairman Mirza Abdul Jalil, the function was also addressed by Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury, finance secretary Dr Akbar Ali Khan, additional secretary (Banking) Dr Shoaib Ahmed and BKB managing director Murshid Kuli Khan. Kibria distributed cheques for Tk 19.08 lakh among 103 families who reside in different slums in the city to help them resettle to their paternal places. BKB so far has disbursed Tk 3.66 crore among 2,039 families to rehabilitate 12,200 slum-dwellers in their villages. Matia Chowdhury stressed the need for running the programme free from corruption. |
