Dhaka--(UNB)-Bangladesh and Greece yesterday agreed to expand bilateral cooperation in wider fields encompassing trade, shipping, tourism, manpower, education, science and culture.

The broad-based agreement came at the official talks between Greek Foreign Minister George A. Papandreou and Bangladesh Foreign Minister Abdus Samad Azad at State Guesthouse Meghna.

Addressing a post-talk press conference, Papandreou said Greece would help develop a school in Chittagong and send teachers for imparting training to personnel in shipping.

He said Greece had framed a new law which would help regularize unauthorized Bangladeshis working over there and discussed an agreement with Bangladesh so that people from here could go to Greece legally.

At present about 6,000 Bangladeshis are living in Greece, a third of them without legal immigration papers.

In reply to a question, Papandreou said his country agreed to provide more scholarships to Bangladeshi students in archeology and shipping and cooperate in developing tourism in the country.

He said his European Union country is also interested in making investment in telecommunications, energy and tourism sectors here, which are lucrative fields for investing capital after these state monopolies have been opened to private sector.

Besides, both Greece and Bangladesh are discussing a number of agreements, including avoidance of double taxation, for enhancing trade between the two countries.

During 1999-2000, Bangladesh exported merchandize worth US $ 5.31 million to Greece and imported goods worth US $ 1.57 million.
