Dhaka-- (UNB)- Hundreds of people queued before the central bank counters to collect the new polymer 10-taka note as a souvenir.

Bangladesh Bank introduced the waterproof plastic currency note on the occasion of Martyred Intellectuals Day yesterday (December 14).

To satisfy the huge crowds who rushed since the morning, Bangladesh Bank authorities decided not to exchange more than Tk 100 per head.

Cliff Gerathy, an executive of Australia-based Securency that supplied the note who was in Dhaka yesterday, briefed the cash handlers of commercial banks about the dealing with the new currency note.

The notes last much longer and remain much cleaner than traditional paper notes.

Printed by Note Printing Australia Limited, a subsidiary of the Reserve Bank of Australia, the note carries the portrait of Father of the Nation and the image of National Mosque on one side and the image of Jatiya Sangsad on the other.

Clear window with flower vignette is the key feature of the new note.

Shadow image of Royal Bengal Tiger, see-through image of 10, optical threads are also among the special security features of the 130X60 mm-size note, smaller and thinner than the existing 10-taka notes.

Cliff said the expertise of minting polymer bank notes would be transferred to the Security Printing Corporation (BD) Ltd to facilitate its printing locally. A number of Bangladesh Bank officials have already taken training in Australia in this craftsmanship.

Bangladesh Bank released posters and pamphlets to make aware the note-users about the special characteristics of the new notes. To maintain durability and longevity of these notes, the central bank advised the users to avoid sharp fold and not to staple or make hole during bundling.

If becomes dirty, the note can be washed in water, Cliff told the bank officials while briefing them in the central bank conference room.
