Dhaka-- (UNB)- After a Jatiya Sangsad body suggested merger of two state-run handicapped industrial financing agencies, Bangladesh Shilpa Bank held a soul-searching review to find a way out of crisis.

The BSB board of directors, while reviewing the Bank’s overall performances, including loan recovery and sanction, Tuesday, felt the urgency of making it self-generating and capable of meeting operating expenses from operating profits.

Parliamentary standing committee on Finance Ministry on Monday suggested that BSB and Bangladesh Shilpa Rin Sangstha (BSRS), both burdened with overdue loans and facing acute provision deficit, should be merged.

“There is no need of two ailing agencies just for realising overdue,” the lawmakers said.

Both the agencies have long stopped industrial financing for want of funds.

BSB Chairman Prof Ashraf Uddin Chowdhury however said the Shilpa Bank overcame its stagnation and now achieved dynamism.

“Loan-recovery drive should be geared up while authorities need to be more careful in sanctioning new loans,” he said in view of the critical time.

BSB managing director Rabiul Hossain observed all indicators marked up-trend as “a new sense of dynamism has been added in the bank management”.

The BSB sanctioned Tk 23 crore for five projects against Tk 100 crore notional limit given by Bangladesh Bank.

BSB general managers Dr Nazmul bari, ASM Rezaul Quddus, Obaed Ullah, ASM Shahjahan, AKM Nazrul Islam and Khalilur Rahman Chowdhury also attended the review meeting.
