Dhaka-- (Bangla2000) – British High Commissioner David Carter yesterday said if Bangladesh is to prosper in the 21st century exploiting its potential, it needs to embrace the challenge of globalization. “Globalization is a very important process for Bangladesh. The future of many of Bangladesh’s industries such as textiles and shrimp farming depend on trends of global markets,” the diplomat commented. His comment came in the wake of publishing of a new White Paper by the UK government on International Development which sets out an ambitious new agenda for tackling of the key challenges for the 21st century, the reduction and eventual elimination of extreme poverty globally. The new White Paper strengthens the commitment of the UK to help Bangladesh meet the challenges. Launched by International Development Secretary Clare Short, the White Paper “Eliminating World Poverty: Making Globalization Work for the Poor” looks specifically at the challenges and opportunities presented by globalization and what these mean for the world’s poorest countries and people. Clare Short said, “One in five of the people who share this planet are living in abject poverty. Yet we have knowledge, technology and capital in abundance.” Globalisation brings with opportunities some risks. If the poorest people and countries can be included in the global economy on more beneficial terms, it could lead to a rapid reduction in global poverty. “But if we go on as we are the poor will become more marginalised,” Clare said, adding, “our task is to help manage globalisation in a way that allows us to systematically reduce poverty”. Among the new commitments in the White Paper is that British Development Assistance will no longer be restricted to procurement of goods and services in the UK. It has a commitment to action on corruption and increased support for world environmental initiatives. The White Paper will be launched in Bangladesh by Alan Johnson, the UK Minister for Competitiveness, in January. The White Paper can be downloaded from the Website http://www.globalization gov.uk/ |
