ADB & OPEC to assist for Dhaka-Khulna highway

Dhaka-- (UNB) – Five agreements were signed here yesterday (Tuesday) for constructing a 162.33-kilometre road between the capital and the southwestern region, including the divisional city of Khulna.


The Dhaka-Mawa-Bhanga-Bhatiapara-Mollahat-Town Noapara road will be constructed within three years at a cost of Tk 1086 crore.


Communications Minister Anwar Hossain, who was present during the signing ceremony at the Sarak Bhaban, urged all to complete the project on time maintaining the required standard.


State Minister for Communications Anisul Haq Chowdhury and Communications Secretary Syed Rezaul Hayat were also present, said an official handout.


Chief Engineer of the Roads and Highways Department M Fazlul Haq signed the agreements on behalf of the government while Zhang Hong, Won Jae Lee, Mir Zahir Hossain, Abdul Monem and Wang Li Jie on behalf of the contractors.


The Bangladesh Government and the Asian Development Bank will bear the major share of the project cost. OPEC, NDF and DANIDA will also finance the project.


Bangladesh Consultants Ltd. and Japan Overseas Corporation have been appointed as consultants for the project.


Under the supervision of Roads and Highways Department, the Ministry of Communications will implement the project in five components – Dhaka-Mawa, Mawa-Bhanga with 450-meter Arialkhan Bridge, Bhanga-Bhatiapara, Bhatiapara-Mollahat with 10-km Gopalganj by-pass, and Mollahat-Town Noapara.


On completion of the project, an easier and shorter road link will be established between Dhaka and the southwestern region, which include Khulna, Jessore and Benapole.


Besides, the project will help establish effective road link between Mongla and Chittagong ports, and contribute in reducing poverty in the southwestern region, the handout said.


The road will be a part of the road-network, which includes the proposed Padma Bridge.
