Chittagong-- (UNB) – Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury has threatened to launch street movement against the proposed private container terminal close to the port saying, such terminal having no control of the government will be perilous for the nation.

The private container terminal is proposed to be built by SSA, an American company, at a cost of $500 million on the confluence of river Karnaphuli.

“Private container terminal having no control of the government will go against the interest of the nation. It will ruin the Chittagong Port and the country economically,” the Mayor told a press conference in his office this evening.

He offered three alternative short, medium and long term proposals. These are: 1) implementation of the Port Act in letter and spirit, 2) private container terminal at the middle of 25-mile Swandip channel from Patenga to Sitakunda, and 3) deep sea ports at Kutubdia and Maheshkhali under a 50-year long term programme.

Mohiuddin sensed a deep-rooted conspiracy involving Pakistani intelligence agency ISI in the move for private container terminal at the confluence of Karphuli to destroy the Chittagong Port.

He accused relevant officials – Secretary Shohel Chowdhury, Chairman Abdul Haque and former Secretary Mohammad Mofazzal Karim and Joint Secretary Mahamudul Hasan – for their involvement in the conspiracy against the interest of the nation.

The Mayor demanded seizure of documents of 65 meetings so far held about the private container, relieve those officials from their responsibility and probe their anti-national activities by a neutral committee of the Parliamentary Standing Committee.

He said no feasibility study was made by experts for the proposed private container terminal close to the port.

Former chairman of Chittagong Port Eng Mahmudul Islam and Ward Commissioners were present at the press conference.
