Chittagong-- (UNB) - Construction work of long-cherished MA Hannan International Airport here has been completed at a cost of Tk 541 crore.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the airport next month.

A Japanese construction firm with the financial help of Japan Bank of International Corporation (JBIC) completed the work within the stipulated time.

The construction firm will hand over the completed project to the civil aviation authorities on Monday (December 11), official sources said.

The airport was built on a total of 2.2 lakh square feet area including 9,643 square feet runways and a terminal equipped with all modern facilities.

Two boarding bridges were set up in the airport to facilitate the passengers’ movement between aircraft and terminal building.

The airport has a visitors lounge with accommodation facilities for nearly 3,000 people as well as 10 well-equipped rooms for foreign airlines.

Noted artists Quaiyum Chowdhury, Abdur Razzak, Hashem Khan and Monsur-ul-Karim worked on the murals engraved on the terminal walls.

Official sources said the entire airport area was protected by barbed wire and brick-wall to ensure security and prevent illegal entrance.

Engineer Asaduzzaman who supervised the project said the airport has all international standard facilities to serve any foreign airline.

He said several airlines of the Middle Eastern countries have already expressed their eagerness to operate their flights at the airport.

The process of signing air service agreements is going on at the government level, he said.
