Dhaka-- (UNB)- Opposition leader Begum Khaleda Zia will sit with business leaders after Eid for open discussion on politics and economics.

She gave the consent in a post-iftar meeting she had with country’s leading businesspeople at her Minto Road official residence last (Saturday) evening.

Former FBCCI president Abdul Awal Minto, DCCI president Aftabul Islam, MCCI president Latifur Rahman, BGMEA president Anisur Rahman Sinha, Mosharraf Hossain and Mahbubur Rahman were present among others during the post-iftar parleys.

The opposition leader hosted the iftar party to the business community, attended by about 500 industrialists and businessmen.

Sohel F Rahman, Mostofa Golam Quddus, Kashem Haider, Redwan Ahmed, Rashed Maksud Khan, Manjur Ahmed, Ataur Rahman Angur, Abdus Sattar and Nazrul Islam also attended the party.

BNP secretary general Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, Shamsul Islam and Lutfozzman Babar were also present.

Emerging from the meeting Aftabul Islam said they welcomed Begum Zia’s overture for having open discussion with all business leaders.

In this respect, Aftab reminded the opposition leader of her plan voiced at a dialogue with business leaders in July 1998 for reviewing budget discussions every six months with them.

He, however, quoted Begum Zia as saying she could not hold such review meetings “due to unavoidable circumstances”. But this matter would also come up in the post-Eid meeting.

Replying to a question, Aftab said schedule of the meeting was not fixed up.

Abdul Awal Minto told UNB that interaction between the government and opposition is “an integral part of democracy”.

Welcoming Begum Zia’s gesture he said it would help bring business-friendly environment in the country.

During the talks Begum Zia asked Awal if he would really be a candidate for Dhaka City Mayor. Meeting sources said he responded smilingly that he is “serious candidate”.

Speculations are there in the capital that Minto might contest the next mayoral elections of Dhaka City Corporation.
