Noakhali-- (UNB) – The proposed Meghna Fertilizer Factory, an ambitious project undertaken in 1988 raising hope among the farmers, could not be implemented in 12 years. Official sources said BCIC undertook the project in 1988 involving Tk 340 crore under the third five-year plan. A feasibility study was also conducted on the proposed factory. BCIC had sent a recommendation to the ministry concerned in 1989 choosing Char Ramanimohon as the possible site for the factory. Inter-ministerial meetings were also held thrice in 1990 to discuss the matter. But the meetings could not take any concrete decision. PDB, WDB, R&H Department, Bakhrabad Gas Field and other organisations concerned had assured of all kinds of cooperation in setting up the factory. A Japanese technical firm, Toyo Engineering Company, had also assured to provide technical assistance for the project. But the fate of the project became uncertain after the 1990 political changeover. An official, wishing anonymity, told UNB that taka several crores have already been spent in three years after the project was undertaken. With the implementation of the project, additional crops worth over Tk one crore could be produced each year on 35 lakh acres of lands under Chandpur, Dhanagoda and Feni-Muhuri irrigation projects and Comilla-Gumti Embankment Project. |
