Pabna--(UNB) - Ishwardi Export Processing Zone, first of its kind in the northern region, is expected to be inaugurated someday this month.


Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will formally inaugurate the Export Processing Zone.


Construction of roads, offices, residential buildings and police box have already been completed.


The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) at a meeting on October 20, 1998 approved plan for setting up the EPZ at Pakshey in Iswardi involving Tk 73.43 crore.


The first phase work on project started on March 8 last year and the second phase is expected to be launched after inauguration of the EPZ.


On completion, some 22,000 people would get job opportunity in the Export Processing Zone.


The IEPZ is being established on 308.794 acres of land acquired from Bangladesh Railway. Some 166 plots have been allotted for the investors in the first phase.


Of the total, 42 plots on 58 acres of land have already been finalized. Apart from this, 35 acres of land have been set aside for construction of administrative and residential building.


Construction of the buildings on 12.66 acres of land is also progressing fast.


Project Director Syed AH Lutful Karim told UNB that the IEPZ will have all modern facilities and customs checking to facilitate export of goods.


He said the zone is expected to be connected with gas pipeline by April next year. The Prime Minister at a meeting recently directed the authorities concerned in this regard.


In addition Iswardi airport remained inoperative for long is also expected to be reopened soon.


Executive Chairman of BEPZA Brigadier Abu Bakar Siddque visited the airport recently.
