Dhaka-- (UNB)- Success in taming system loss and raising revenue in two towns under a new campaign prompted PDB to expand its strategic business drive to 20 more towns.

Power officials said the crusade “worked wonder” in Sherpur and Jamalpur towns where system loss came down significantly and revenue increased by nearly one crore taka.

System loss dropped to 25 and 20 per cent in Sherpur and Jamalpur towns from 34 and 30 per cent respectively in August, when the Board’s Cost and Profit Centre started working.

Besides, revenue collection increased by Tk 38 lakh in Sherpur and Tk 27 lakh in Jamalpur in three months.

Reduction of system loss added to the power board’s collection another Tk 14 lakh from Sherpur and Tk 17 lakh from Jamalpur.

System loss, the euphemism used to mean electricity theft, in the PDB domain is estimated at 36 per cent while its outstanding bills total Tk 2789 crore.

PDB officials said the Cost and Profit Centre divided Bangladesh into 23 strategic business units to take up vigorous drive to cut down power pilferage, increase revenue and improve consumer services.

The campaign includes steps to improve low voltage and load-shedding situation in the distribution areas.

“The special drive aims at establishing a sense of accountability among PDB’s regional officials about the returns from the electricity they are provided,” an official of the board said.

Initially, Sherpur and Jamalpur towns have been selected as a test case and 20 more towns will be taken in the second phase.

“We’ll try to bring down system loss to 15 per cent in these two towns by December and keep the areas under constant monitoring,” said an official of Power Cell, assigned to supervise the strategic business programme.
