Dhaka (UNB) – Britain assured Bangladesh and other least developed countries all cooperation in getting market access to the European Union as per a recent EC resolution. The assurance came from British Minister for Competitiveness Alan Johnson when Commerce Minister Abdul Jalil, now visiting Britain, called on him in London on Thursday. “From the beginning Britain is working for the development of LDCs, including Bangladesh, and the support will continue in the future,” Johnson said. The British minister reaffirmed his government’s cooperation in overall development of Bangladesh, including in trade and investment, according to a message received here today (Friday). He observed that Bangladesh had taken timely steps to improve information technology (IT) industry. The British minister informed Bangladesh minister that he would lead a delegation to Bangladesh on January 14 when his schedule would include inauguration of a British Education and Trade Fair. Jalil said LDCs need extended financial and technological support for capacity building. “Only duty-and quota-free market access is not enough for the development of the LDCs.” Listing various steps taken by the government for the country’s socioeconomic development, the minister said the Bangladesh government is implementing realistic steps to remain competitive in the post-2004 trade regime. The government is also working towards boosting the IT sector like garment industry, and supporting various export-promotion activities. “The country needs extended cooperation for continuing the development activities in all spheres of the economy,” the commerce minister said. He also sought personal influence of the British minister to help increase British investment in Bangladesh. Bangladesh High Commissioner to Britain AH Mahmud Ali and economic minister of the high commission AFM Yahya were present in the meeting. |
