Sangsad Bhaban-- (UNB) - Some 30,75,000 people so far went abroad legally with job, Labour and Employment Minister MA Mannan informed Parliament yesterday(Thursday).


Replying to Nurul Islam Nahid (Awami League) he said the expatriate Bangladeshis sent home foreign currency amounting to Tk 9,829.19 crore during the last fiscal year.


The Minister told Husne Ara Wahid (AL) that the United Nations gave compensation of Tk 1,522.16 crore to Bangladeshi workers affected by the Kuwait-Iraq war.


About 260,000 Bangladeshis are currently employed in Kuwait, he said.


To a supplementary from Nurul Islam Nahid, he said demand for Bangladeshi workers is more than from other countries.


The minister admitted that some Bangladeshi workers are in jail in different countries for using fake passports and false documents.


In reply to another question, he said the Labour Ministry would set up a training centre in Sylhet at a cost of Tk 15 crore to impart vocational training.
