Dhaka-- (UNB) – China has been invited to invest in various fields, including agro-industries, fruit-processing, fisheries, tourism and poultry farming, in the Chittagong Hill Tracts to share the CHT peace dividends.

“We welcome friendly countries to participate in the government’s measures to develop CHT in order to improve the standard of living of the people,” Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs (CHTA) Minister Kalpa Ranjan Chakma said in an official meeting between Bangladesh and China in Beijing Tuesday.

The CHTA Minister led a five-member delegation to the meeting while Chinese Minister of State for Ethnic Affairs Commission Li Dezhu led the host side.

During the two-hour talks Kalpa Ranjan Chakma briefed his Chinese counterpart on many issues relating to the Chittagong Hill Tracts as well as events leading to the signing of the historic CHT Peace Accord.

The CHTA Minister said complete peace is now prevailing in the Chittagong Hill Tracts following signing of the historic peace accord and this area is conducive to economic development and foreign investment.

He said the government gave priority to resolving various issues as well as rapid socioeconomic development of the people of CHT.

It has created a separate ministry on Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs and formed the CHT Regional Council, CHT Development board and three Hill District Councils for this purpose.

“The government already has embarked on an ambitious development programme to improve economic condition of the people of CHT areas and some international agencies are showing interest in the development of the CHT,” the CHTA minister apprised the Chinese.

In the meeting the Chinese Minister gave to the Bangladesh side a detailed briefing on China’s strategies and politics towards the national minorities and ethnic groups.

The visiting Bangladesh delegation sat in a meeting with state councilor of the state council Ismail Amat at the latter’s office on November 22.

In the meeting, the state councilor conveyed his appreciation for Bangladesh’s support to China on several international and regional issues, as well as Bangladesh’s support to China on Taiwan and Tibet.

The state councilor emphasized “both countries have many ethnic groups and the common tasks to develop regions inhabited by them in order to raise their standard of living and narrow the gap between the developed and less-developed regions”.

He suggested exchange of visits of high-level delegations of both the countries that would be able to play vital role in this respect.
