Bangladesh seeks Malaysian assistance in improving port

Dhaka-- (UNB)- Bangladesh has sought Malaysian assistance in improving the antiquated port infrastructures and services to facilitate handling of increasing external trade.

The appeal was made when a seven-member official delegation met the authorities of Portclang in Kuala Lumpur yesterday(Thursday).

Board of Investment (BOI) Executive Chairman M Mokammel Haque, who is leading the delegation, explained Bangladesh government’s plan to allow construction of container terminal in private sector, modernization of Mongla Port and construction of a deep-sea port near Chittagong Port.

Besides, the Bangladesh delegation invited the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers to invest in gas exploration, information technology, light engineering and composite textile sectors in Bangladesh.

Detailing the investment potential in Bangladesh, the delegation leader told Malaysian investors that Bangladesh, for its “strategic geopolitical location”, abundant natural resources, easily trainable workforce and attractive incentive packages, could be their best investment location.

The Federation expressed its interest in bringing a trade delegation to Bangladesh to look for investment areas.

The delegation included Privatisation Commission member NC Paul, director general of Prime Minister’s office Khondkar Mizanur Rahman, Planning Division Joint Secretary Syed Abdul Munim, Economic Relations Division Joint Chief AKM Khairul Alam, Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation Department (IMED) director general Subhash Chandra Ghosh and BOI director Abdul Majid.
