Dhaka-- (UNB) – Bangladesh should protect local industry and service sectors to encourage local entrepreneurship despite the bindings of globalisation and liberalisation. Industries Minister Tofail Ahmed said this while addressing the inaugural ceremony of a two-day silver jubilee programme of Bangladesh Association of Consulting Engineers (BACE) at the LGED auditorium here today. The association was founded in 1975 with seven local consulting engineering firms and its membership has risen to 30 over the 25 years. BACE president Mohabub Haque chaired the inaugural function also addressed by Lailun Nahar Ekram. The minister said a system should be developed to protect the service sector of engineering consultancy. “We have a fascination to foreign goods and services with or without reasons,” he said, urging local engineers and architects to improve their consulting services competing with foreign firms. He advised the firms to increase transparency and accountability for reducing outward tendency of the appointing authorities. Tofail lauded the contributions of local engineers and architects in the reconstruction of war-ravaged Bangladesh after independence. He said engineering consultants have much work to do to make use of Bangladesh’s tremendous prospects and exploit liberal investment policy. |
