Dhaka-- (UNB) - The just-out president of FBCCI Abdul Awal Mintoo has said politics and bureaucracy, controlled by vested interests, would not bring the required changes in the society.

“Changes will come only if all elements of the society unite and work hard,” Mintoo said before formally handing over the charge to his successor Yussuf Abdullah Harun at the Federation’s annual general meeting yesterday.

Giving a brief account of FBCCI activities in last two years under his stewardship, Mintoo said they had tried to play an effective role in the preparation of national budget and assisting the government offices in removal of impediments to trade and industry.

Mentioning some positive features of the country’s economy, Mintoo said the GDP maintained a 5 per cent growth in last four years while both domestic savings and investment marked a significant rise over those in 1990-91.

About private sector’s growing participation in the national economy, Mintoo said private sector’s share of investment increased from 10.27 per cent of GDP in 1991 to 15.68 per cent in 1999. Private sector contribution to export increased from 74 per cent to 90 per cent in the same period.

At present, private enterprises account for 74.57 per cent of the total employment, he added.

Yussuf Abdullah Harun, who has been elected FBCCI president for the second time, sought cooperation from the new executives to work for promoting the private sector activities.

New vice president Mohammad Ali and 30 members of the executive committee also took over charges yesterday.
