Dhaka-- (UNB)-The government would launch a Tk 500 crore socioeconomic development programme for rural people of 27 districts under a second small-scale water resource development project financed by donors.


Local Government Minister Zillur Rahman announced the plan at a daylong national workshop on small-scale water resources development, organised by LGED at its auditorium yesterday (Tuesday).


Speaking as chief guest he said under the new programme Local Government Engineering Department would implement 400 sub- projects at upazila level with the financial assistance of ADB, the Netherlands and Bangladesh government.


The workshop was informed that the first project of small- scale water resource development was initiated in 1996 which achieved tremendous success in 37 districts in western part of the country, spending Tk 271 crore.


It resulted in an increase of 11,205 mts of cereal production and 2,890 mts of non-cereal with 26 per cent of increased fisheries resources for implementation of the project.


Under that project works of 1,092 km of embankment, 1,191 km of canal digging and 631 water control structures were done.


Presided over by chief engineer of LGED Mohammad Ataullah Bhuiyan, the function was also addressed, among others, by local government secretary Amiyantgshu Sen, ADB Agricultural sector chief KH Talukder, First Secretary of the Netherlands Embassy Peter D Vries, project team leader Dr Paul Egli and project director Nurul Islam.
