Dhaka (UNB) – India shows positive attitude to Bangladesh’s proposal for duty-free market access of items under 25 categories to the billion-strong India’s market.

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh ML Tripathi conveyed the positive attitude of the Indian government in a meeting with Industries Minister Tofail Ahmed at his office here today (Sunday).

The envoy said the expert committees between the two countries would jointly finalize the items.

“Had Bangladesh got access to the market of one billion people, it could cash huge dividends for economic development,” he said.

Appreciating the Indian position on market access the Industries Minister said many unresolved issues had been solved between the two countries since 1996 as both the governments were serious to resolve the outstanding issues like Ganges water sharing, CHT peace and so.

“We will also come to a positive conclusion of duty-free market access of 25-category items as we have a common goal of achieving mutual prosperity,” Tofail said.

He recalled the contribution of Indian people and government to Bangladesh’s liberation war.

Pointing to current trade imbalance with India the minister said, “We are not worried about the trade gap because most of the imports are for export purposes and our importers are benefited from such exports.”

He cited Bangladesh’s trade with USA saying annual export to USA is more than two billion dollars of worth against the imports worth 200 million dollars.

He said duty-free market access of Bangladesh’s products would offer Indian consumers quality goods at competitive prices and motivate India’s corporate investors to go for joint ventures tapping common resources.

During his Dhaka visit in 1998, Indian Prime Minister agreed to Bangladesh’s proposal for market access for 25-category items. Accordingly, Bangladesh government prepared a list of exportable under 25 categories and sent it to Indian authorities.

Commerce Ministry officials said they were yet to get any response from Indian side.
