Dhaka (UNB) – Brushing aside the allegations of pushing nails or injecting liquid into exportable shrimps, frozen food exporters yesterday said they received any written complaint neither from the government nor from any buyer.

“It’s a false allegation, none of the factory owners nor exporters push nails or any other liquid like sago,” Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association (BFFEA) president Kazi Shahnewaz told a press conference here yesterday.

BFFEA secretary general M Aminullah, Azizur Rahman, Golam Mostafa and foreign buyer Iqbal Ahmed were present at the news conference.

“Occasionally we receive complaints from our buyers about the presence of nails, it’s negligible,” Shahnewaz said opposing the press reports about the poor quality of shrimp.

Shahnewaz said they had already modernised the export-oriented factories and fish processing in line with the HACCP system and EU prescribed standard of sanitation.

BFFEA members exported some 3000 containers worth of Tk 1800 crore last fiscal, of which only two containers worth about Tk 2 crore were cancelled.

“It’s quite natural that our competitors will hatch conspiracy to destroy our good reputation in the international market,” Shahnewaz told newsmen.

In response to query, the BFFEA leaders said actions have already taken against some low quality shrimp suppliers and began scanning their shrimps.

Referring to bacterial attack, they blamed using below temperature preservation by foreign countries.

Bangladesh exported frozen fish and fish products worth of US$ 356.26 million in 1999-2000 fiscal to various countries, including USA, Europe, Japan, China, Thailand and Canada.
