Dhaka-- (UNB)- Before retaking office, newly elected FBCCI director Selima Ahmed resigned mooting demand for electoral reforms and an overhaul of the apex trade body that she said failed to represent businesses effectively.

Her surprise decision came only nine days after election on October 21 to a second term as director representing Bangladesh Automobile Assemblers and Manufacturers Association (BAAMA).

“I announce my resignation just to draw the attention of the business community and alert them that FBCCI needs massive reshuffle, its election system needs reforms,” she said formally announcing her resignation at a press conference at Dhaka Club yesterday (Monday).

Selima said the FBCCI lacked representation of major sectors in the national economy and did not give enough focus on small and medium-scale industries.

Information technology, garments, leather, frozen foods and jute are among the areas that do not have any representation in the Federation.

On the other hand, some less-important sectors have got more than one representative elected to the FBCCI board.

The leading woman entrepreneur criticised the previous leaderships of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) for their failure to lead the apex trade body properly to its business goals.

She said the existing election system must be changed to ensure representation of all major sectors in the apex trade body. But her all efforts made during her last two years’ stay in the FBCCI board to bring such a change fell flat.

Selima however vowed to carry forward her campaign for change from outside the executive board.

BAAMA’s founding president Matlub Ahmed said his association is happy to sacrifice the representation in FBCCI for the cause of electoral reforms. People from IT and garment sectors contested the election, but they could not be elected. So there must be something wrong in the election system, he felt.
