Dhaka-- (UNB)- Bangladesh Bank will mint new currency notes of all denominations valued between Tk 10 and Tk 500 in two standard sizes instead of separate size of each note. Notes for Tk 500 and Tk 100 will have the same size, 152mmX65mm, while notes for Tk 50, Tk 20 and Tk 10 will be of 130mmX60mm size. Previous notes of varied sizes, now in circulation, will also remain valid during their life. The step towards redesigning the currency has been taken following public complain about difficulty in recognizing a new 500-taka note of small size released recently. A central bank announcement yesterday said bringing currency notes in two standard sizes would make printing less time-consuming and less expensive than before. “Printing currency notes of various sizes require varied sizes of security paper with embedded security features while notes of two standard sizes will need only two sizes of paper,” it explained. To easily differentiate the currency notes of similar sizes, notes of different values will be of widely varied colours. It cited the printing design of the US dollar and said notes of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 denominations of the greenback are of the same size. Same-size notes of different value are also there in many major currencies. |
