Dhaka-- (UNB) - The government has decided to construct a hostel for women garment workers in Dhaka at a cost of Tk 14 crore.


Of the amount, the government will provide Tk 10 crore and BRAC, a leading NGO, will give Tk 4 crore, including land for the hostel.


The decision was taken at the 6th meeting of Greehayan (housing) Trusty Board yesterday (Wednesday) with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair. Finance Minister Shah AMS Kibria, Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Mohammad Farashuddin and concerned Secretaries were present.


The meeting reviewed the progress in the credit programme for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) at the field level. It was informed that Tk 47.10 crore were so far disbursed till October 15 this year and a total of 14,326 houses built during the period.


Some 61 NGOs are implementing credit programmes to build 23,550 houses in 218 upazilas under 62 districts.


The meeting was apprised that Tk 158.32 lakh were realized out of total loan of Tk 160.78 lakh from the NGOs, registering a recovery of 99 per cent.


It decided to increase the number NGOs to 100 from the present 61 now involved in credit implementation programme at the field level.


The meeting was informed that Tk 5 crore were disbursed as house building loan for affected people in the flood-hit areas as per decision of the national disaster council meeting, presided over by the Prime Minister on Oct. 11.
