Dhaka-- (UNB)- Bangladesh and Hong Kong signed an air service agreement yesterday (Tuesday) to further boost air links, especially for cargo.

Bangladesh's secretary of Civil Aviation and Tourism Chowdhury Mohammad Mohsin and Hong Kong's secretary for Economic Services Sandra Lee signed the agreement in Hong Kong on behalf of their respective governments, said a message received here yesterday.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines managing director Air Commodore Khusrul Alam and civil aviation official Habibullah Khan are aiding the secretary in the three-day state level negotiations for further developing air services between the two countries.

On the first day of the bilateral talks, both sides agreed to expand air services for mutual benefits.

In Dhaka, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Engr Mosharraf Hossain told UNB that Bangladesh wants to establish cargo freight services with Hong Kong to facilitate two-way trades with the entire region. Earlier, Bangladesh had such arrangements with Korean Airlines.

Hossain hoped that cargo services with Hong Kong will increase Bangladesh's exports of garments and other goods to Hong Kong and the adjoining regions. "We're having two flights now from both sides. We're willing to commence cargo freights to facilitate trade."

Air links between the two countries were first established in 1989 when Hong Kong's Dragonair started flying to Dhaka, while Bangladesh's Biman Airlines' services commenced in 1993.

The new air pact provides a legal framework for further development of air services between two sides.

The government said passenger traffic carried by the two airlines on the route had increased by 33 percent during the first six months this year.

Hong Kong has air services agreements with 45 countries.
