ECNEC approves seven development projects

Dhaka-- (UNB) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday directed the concerned authorities to take necessary steps for immediate rehabilitation and repair of the roads wrecked by devastating floods in the frontier districts.


She also asked concerned department to immediately construct bridges and culverts on the places where roads were cut open to drain out stagnating floodwaters.


Presiding over a meeting of the Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) the Prime Minister suggested widening the Jessore-Benapole road that is used for inter-district and cross-border vehicular traffic.


In the meeting the ECNEC approved seven development projects involving Tk 346 crore 32.47 lakh, including Tk 49.73 crore in project aid.


The approved projects are: upgradation of the Boda-Debiganj-Jaldhakaroad road as regional highway, upgradation of Khustia-Meherpur road as regional highway, Agro-based and Technology Development Project (2nd phase), development of the existing horticulture centers in Chittagong Hill Tracts and Cox's Bazar, vertical extension of the building of Film and Publication Department and modernization, change and expansion of the equipment of the Film Laboratory Complex (amended), installation of the new centrally air-condition plant for Dhaka center of Bangladesh Television and the special project to complete the incomplete works of eight district stadiums and their modernization (2nd amendment).


State Minister for Planning Dr Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir placed some more projects conceived at a cost of Tk 29 crore 97.38 lakh for the ECNEC appraisal.


The projects are: Institutional Development of the Water Supply and Sanitation Sector, Sagorkhali-Barobila Water Drainage Project (Khustia), Sariakandi (Bogra) Women's Training and Development Center and project to install a permanent colour lab for the media center of the Press Information Department and modernize its Reference section.


Finance Minister Shah AMS Kibria, Education Minister ASHK Sadique, Industries Minister Tofail Ahmed, Food Minister Amir Hossain Amu, Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury, Communications Minister Anwar Hossain, State Minister for Youth, Sports and Cultural Affairs and State Minister for Planning Dr Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir attended the meeting.


Cabinet Secretary, Planning Secretary, members of the Planning Commission, Secretary to the Prime Minister, ERD Secretary, IMED Secretary and other concerned secretaries were also present.
