Dhaka-- (UNB)- Non-government organisations yesterday received cheques for Tk 1.80 crore from the government for lending to the poor at lower interest for building 800 houses.

Finance Minister Shah AMS Kibria handed over the cheques to 13 NGOs in the fourth installment sanction from the Housing Fund instituted for the low-income group.

The government has allocated Tk 47.10 crore under the Fund and engaged 61 NGOs in building 23,550 houses in 218 upazilas of 62 districts.

So far Tk 31.88 crore has been released and 14,326 houses constructed. The government lends the NGOs the money at 1 per cent interest while NGOs realise 5 per cent interest from the borrowers.

Handing over the cheques at his chamber the Finance Minister said in the past only the upper and middle classes had access to housing loans. “The present government established Housing Fund for the welfare of the poor, which is an epoch-making step.”

Housing Fund is a recycling fund, which will be expanded in future and more poor people will avail of it. The funds will amount to Tk 500 crore in the next three years, he informed.

Kibria sought sincere cooperation from the NGOs in making the programme of housing for the poor a success.
