Moulvibazar-- (UNB) - Tea industry is lagging behind the international standard due to lack of development research on tea.

There are no sufficient scientists and necessary apparatus in Bangladesh Tea Research Institute (BTRI) to conduct the research work.

Country's lone organisation for tea research, BTRI was established in 1959 to assist the development of tea through scientific research.

The institute has seven research departments to provide scientific and technical assistance to some 157 tea gardens of the country.

Sources said 14 posts of scientists, out of 36, and 35 administrative posts remained vacant for long hampering the normal activities of the institute.

"The vacancy created following stoppage of appointment in any post vacated due to retirement during last seven years," said an official on condition of anonymity.

He said the concerned ministry often seeks report in this regard but does not take any measure.

The official said the technology for tea research has been changed in international level but the institute has been using the age-old one.

There is no device for bio-chemical research including Residue Analysis to examine the essence of tea at the institute.

The sources said any change in this regard could not be possible due to financial constraints facing by BRTI.

They said the fund collected from the tax (tea sale) is not sufficient and very uncertain following unstable situation of tea price and production.

The budget for BRTI and Tea Board is fixed from the sale proceeds with one per cent rate of the sold tea and there is no allotment for the institute from the annual budget.

No measure has even been taken to continue the research and development activities of the tea industry through foreign assistance like rice and wheat cultivation.
