Moulvi Bazar-- (UNB) – Despite availability of abundant silica sand in Srimongal upazila, no glass industry has been built in the district due to absence of proper initiative. The precious silica sand, main raw material for glass industries, is being used in earth filling and other petty works. Some 360 small or large rivers and canals coming from Indian State of Tripura carry silica sands and stones. These sands and stones are deposited inside 16km area of Srimongal upazila. Bangladesh imports huge quantity of silica sands every year spending foreign exchange. But the silica sand found in Srimongal is better in quality than that of the imported one, experts said. It was learnt that local administration leases out silica sand-rich rivers and canals in through away prices to the contractors. Experts said the government can earn huge quantity of money by taking appropriate initiative to use the sand properly. Besides, glass industries could be set up in the district using the sand. |
