Dhaka-- (UNB) – The International Labour Organization (ILO) and Netherlands Government have signed a 4.8 million US $ agreement to help Bangladesh in its efforts to eliminate hazardous child labor in the urban informal sector.

The agreement was signed yesterday by Claudia Coenjaerts, Director of ILO Area Office, Dhaka and S Ijzermans, Ambassador of Netherlands to Bangladesh.

Latifur Rahman, deputy secretary, ministry of labour and employment, was present on the occasion, said an ILO press release.

ILO has a MOU signed with Bangladesh in 1994 committing to jointly work towards the progressive elimination of child labour in Bangladesh.

According to the agreement Netherlands will provide approximately US $ 4.8 million to the ILO’s International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC).

The funds will be used for a three-year comprehensive programme to start soon, to remove children from hazardous work in the urban informal sector, which include roadside shops of the metropolitan cities of Dhaka and Chittagong.

About 20,000 working children and their families will be helped to achieve better lives through innovative workplace monitoring, provision of education, skill training and economic empowerment of the families.
