Dhaka (UNB) - Finance Minister Shah AMS Kibria has asked the officials of Bangladesh missions abroad to play a catalytic role in accelerating the flow of development assistance and increasing exports and foreign investment in the country.


The minister was addressing a meeting in London of ambassadors and other officials of Bangladesh missions in West Europe on his way back from Prague where he attended the 55th Annual Meeting of World Bank-IMF, said a message received here yesterday (Saturday).


The meeting, held on Friday, reviewed the flow of development assistance provided to Bangladesh by different countries of Western Europe and discussed various obstacles to the commitment and disbursement of development assistance.


It also discussed the problem in sectors like readymade garments, knitwear, frozen food, leather goods, ceramic, jute etc. and underscored the need for an increased participation of Bangladesh in European trade fairs.


The Finance Minister underlined the need for promoting joint ventures projects in Bangladesh.


Kibria asked the mission chiefs and other officers to deal with the problems of Bangladesh nationals abroad with high priority.


The meeting reviewed the difficulties and delays associated with remittance sent by Bangladesh citizens. It was decided that stern action would be taken against those who indulged in illegal Hundi business.


Economic Relations Division (ERD) Secretary Dr AKM Moshiur Rahman, Bangladesh high commissioner to UK AH Mahmood Ali, Bangladesh ambassador to France Syed Moazzem Ali, Bangladesh Permanent Representative in Geneva Mohammad Zamir also addressed the meeting.
