Sirajganj, July 2 (UNB) - A UP chairman and Awami League leader was killed in a deadly attack by assailants five km west of Bangabandhu Bridge connecting road in broad daylight today.

Police and locals said Bellal Hossain, 45, was chairman of Saidabad union in sadar upazila and president of the union unit of the ruling party.

An eyewitness account of the killing said: “A gang of miscreants numbering 4-5 waylaid the chairman at about 9:20 am and chopped him to death with sharp weapons in broad daylight at Mulibari checkpost.”

He was going to the Deputy Commissioner’s office in the town by a motorbike for official business when he came under the attack.

“The assailants lay in waiting on roadside and hit him down from the bike in a surprise attack as he reached the spot,” says the firsthand report.

Motives behind the killing were not immediately known. But it was guessed that the chairman fell victim of past enmity.

The body was sent to the Sadar Hospital morgue. A case was filed with police in this connection.

Another UNB report adds: A school night guard was stabbed to death by some miscreants in the town on Saturday night.

The dead was identified as Jalaluddin, 55, night guard of BL Government High School.

Police recovered the body and sent it to the Sadar Hospital for autopsy. A case was filed with the police in this regard.
