Pirojpur, Apr 11 (UNB) – Twenty-six shops and a house were burnt to ashes in a devastating fire at small hours Monday at Dakkhin Bazar in Kaokhali thana of the district.

Fifteen people sustained injuries while putting out the blaze that damaged property worth nearly Tk 1 crore.

Local people said the fire originated from “short circuit” in a tobacco factory at about 3 am. It soon spread to other shops and a house in the vicinity.

Fire fighters from Barisal, Pirojpur and Bhandaria rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze after two hours with the assistance of local people.

On receiving the news, Deputy Commissioner of Pirojpur SM Zahurul Islam along with acting Police Super Nasiruddin Ahmed and other officials visited the spot.

The DC sought assistance from the Relief Ministry for distribution among the affected people.

Of the six thanas in the district, only Pirojpur and Bhandaria have fire service stations.

The people of the area demanded a “River Fire Station” in the district.
