Mymensingh, Apr 24 (UNB) – Some 7,643 mts of standing crops worth about Tk 8.02 crore were damaged by nor’westers in Fulbaria thana of the district in last few days.

According to a preliminary assessment by local Agriculture office, only Boro crops valued at Tk 7.41 crore were damaged in the nor’westers.

Besides, vegetables, pineapple, papaya and banana on 180 hectares of land were damaged causing financial loss about Tk 61 lakh.

On April 14, a severe storm lashed the thana’s Naogao, Rangamati, Kaladaha, Enaetpur and Putijana unions causing extensive damage to crops.

While visiting the areas, most of the affected farmers told the UNB correspondent that they cultivated their croplands taking loans from moneylenders only to worsen their conditions.

Abdul Khaleq, 40, of Maddyapara in Naogaon union said he cultivated Boro paddy on 3 acres of land spending Tk 20,000, including Tk 10,000 borrowed from a moneylender.

Meanwhile, local AED officials have put forward a number of proposals to assuage the sufferings of the affected farmers.

Their suggestions include agricultural assistance for the next Aus and Aman cultivation, delaying payment of electricity bills for deep tubewells, supplying Aus seeds and loan for purchasing agri-inputs.
