Moulvibazar, July 24 (UNB) – Despite availability of huge silica sand on the banks of rivers and streams glass industry is not growing up in the district due to lack of entrepreneurs.

Sources said silica sand is available on about 16km area in Srimongol upazila of the district.

Besides, it comes into the district along with rolling stone through the waters of at least 350 streams and rivers from the border areas of Indian

State of Tripura.

Experts said the silica is used as raw material for making glass and various goods including bulb and toys.

It has also demand in medicine, soap industries and in the computer era for making silicon chip, they added.

It is also said that the silica sand of the area is better than the imported one, which is being used in producing glass in Dhaka and Chittagong.

Huge quantity of glass including jar, bottle, lenses being used in the country is imported from abroad spending crores of taka.

But the experts alleged that the valuable silica sand of the area is being used in unproductive purposes like filling up the ditches and ponds.

A section of officials of District Administration has given lease of the land at throwaway price from where silica sands are being sent to various parts of the country by truck everyday.
