Magura, May 28 (UNB)- Two persons were killed and 20 others injured in a severe nor’wester that lashed 4 four thanas of the district this (Sunday) morning.

 

Local people said during the storm at 6 am Zahidul Islam, 14, a student of class IX and Suruja Khatun, 30 of Sreepur thana died on the spot and 10 others were injured when struck by lightning. Some 10 other people were also injured in house collapse.

 

Of the injured, Kulsum Begum, 20, Manju, 40, Sharifa, 30 and Ujjal 20, were rushed to the Magura Sadar Hospital.

 

Meanwhile, 25 educational institutions, about 1000 kutchha houses were razed to the ground and a huge number of trees and electric poles were uprooted in the storm. Standing crops on vast tracts of land have also been damaged.

 

The worst affected villages are Aksi, Gangnalia, Sangachha, Laskarpur, Sreepur, Ghariapur, Takhalpur, Shalikha, Bunagati, Gangarampur, Birpur, Isakhada.

 

Another report from Shariatpur adds: A severe storm that hit the six upazilas of the district this morning caused extensive damage to standing crops and dwelling houses.

Local people said over a thousand mud-houses were damaged at Bijhari Chamta and Dingamanik unions in Naria upazila.

 

Agriculture Extension Department sources said standing crops on 435 hectares of land were submerged due to the heavy downpour.

 

Power and telephone connections remained snapped in Vederganj, Damudya, Goshairhat and Jajira upazilas since morning.
