Jessore, May 7 (UNB) – A court here has sentenced four railway staff, one of them a station master, to five years in jail for negligence of duty.

The court also fined the convicts -- station master of Singhia Station Jahangir Alam, point man Alamgir Hossain, driver and assistant driver of Parbotipur Rocket Mail -- Tk 1,000 each, in default, to suffer three months more RI.

According to prosecution, a Parbotipur-bound mail from Khulna collided with another train coming from opposite direction due to reluctance of the accused on Oct 11, 1997, leaving 10 people dead and 50 injured.

After examining the records and witnesses, the Additional District and Sessions Judge delivered the judgement on April 30.
