Jamalpur, Nov 20 (UNB)- Valuables of four shops and a hotel worth about Tk 10 lakh were gutted in a fire at a market at Station road in Islampur upazila headquarters on Thursday.

Witnesses said the fire originated from a candle of filling station when workers of the station were pouring petrol from the drum and soon the fire engulfed the jewelry-shop, fertilizer-shop, cosmetic-shop, filling station and a hotel.

Later the local people with the help of police brought the fire under control. But fire fighters came to the spot from Sadar upazila after an hour that angered the local people. But police saved them from the wrath of the people.

Later the fire was brought under total control after one a half-hours of frantic efforts.

After the incident, agitated students and local people brought out a precession demanding a fire service station in the upazila.
